Choko Group Visit To Kruger and Kodumela
In April 2007, a group of Choko supporters visited South Africa. The self-funded trip began with a few days in the Kruger National Park where we had the opportunity to get to know each other better and come together as a team; competitive wildlife spotting and the quizzes set by organisers, James and Bev Butler, added to the fun.
After Kruger we travelled to Hazyview where we enjoyed the fabulous hospitality of the Rissington Inn. Owner Chris and his staff catered for our every need, including escorting guests back to their rooms to check for any frogs and bugs that may have been looking for somewhere to spend the night!
The next three days were spent at Kodumela, visiting schools, creches, individual homes and communal gardens. The days were roller coasters of emotion, renewed determination to help and deep respect for the way those with so little cope. One of the most surprising things we learned was that we have so much more to learn from the people who live within the Kodumela project area than they will ever learn from us.
We then went our separate ways; some back to Johannesburg and the long flight home, some to other parts of South Africa for a few days holiday and some stayed by the pool at Rissington until it was time for them to move on too.
