South Africa 2015

third and final trip to kodumela

Write-up by Estelle Browne

Our third, and final, trip to South Africa took place in 2015.  We again started in Kruger National Park before moving on to our base at Rissington for our days at Kodumela.

Whilst there were still a lot of distressing sights, many things had improved. We were once again made to feel royally welcomed at the schools we visited and were delighted by the many displays of dance, song and work given by the learners.

The Lafata Women were still in business and their enterprises were going from strength to strength.  Animal husbandry had increased in the area with pigs and cattle as well as chickens helping to feed the locals.

Of course, the one highlight none of us could wait to see was the now up and running Morabundi Special Needs Centre.  This is now catering for more than 50 children and young people. As well as a place to learn and have fun there is a physiotherapy room and the local district nurse attends regularly. How far away from  what we saw in 2007 this was – a pipedream them – a reality now.  All thanks to the wonderful people in and around Cholsey.
